TUTU, GHANA — January 12, 2026. In a ceremony that marked a significant milestone for education in rural Ghana, Smile At School a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving learning environments in underserved communities officially handed over a fully refurbished kindergarten block to the Tutu Presby "A" School on Monday, 12th January 2026. The event brought together school staff, community members, and members of Team Smile At School, celebrating the completion of a renovation that promises a brighter, safer, and more inspiring start to school life for the area's youngest pupils.
The focus on young learners at a critical stage
The Tutu Presby "A" Kindergarten Block, which serves young children at the critical foundation stage of their education, had long been in need of significant repair and improvement. Recognizing the urgent need, Smile At School embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment project to ensure that every child who walks through those doors is welcomed by an environment that encourages learning, safety, and well-being.
The renovated block now stands as a testament to what collaborative goodwill can achieve clean walls, improved infrastructure, and a reinvigorated space that both teachers and students can take pride in.
The shared values of education and social responsibility
The success of this project would not have been possible without the generous support of two esteemed educational institutions in the Netherlands. Hermann Wesselink College, based in Amstelveen, and Jenaplanschool De Brug, based in Utrecht, served as the primary partners for the renovation initiative. Both institutions share a deep commitment to quality education and social responsibility values that align closely with Smile At School's mission on the ground in Ghana.
This cross-continental partnership exemplifies the power of international solidarity in addressing educational inequality. By pooling resources, expertise, and passion, the Dutch schools and Smile At School have demonstrated that borders are no barrier to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children.
The official handover ceremony on 12th January 2026 was a moment of deep pride and gratitude for the entire Tutu community. School authorities were formally welcomed into the refurbished block amid celebration, with heartfelt appreciation expressed to Smile At School and its Dutch partners for their invaluable contribution.
The lasting change achieved through unity
The occasion served as a powerful reminder that when communities, NGOs, and international partners work together with a common goal, lasting change becomes possible. The children of Tutu now have a kindergarten block that reflects their worth and potential.
"Every child deserves a school environment that inspires them to dream and to learn. This refurbishment is not just about bricks and mortar, it is about telling the children of Tutu that they matter."
